Oregano, more known as marjoram, is a plant of the Labiatae family, whose scientific name is Origanum vulgare. Its essential oil has many virtues and is used in various therapeutic treatments.
Oregano is an herb native to Europe, particularly Hungary and Albania. It grows wild in the arid mountains and sunny well, explaining the meaning of his name from the Greek origanos, which means "mountain of brightness". It is also adaptable to other climates such as the Middle East and Central America, and is easily cultivated in India and Mexico. Very lively and aromatic, marjoram has hairy stems and leaves reddish ovals. It usually blooms in summer, giving a purple flower. By distillation of fresh flowering heads to water vapor, the essential oil of a brown color, sometimes turning yellow, is obtained, for many cures. Biochemically, the oil is mainly composed of two-thirds carvacrol and linalool quarter. Other elements such as geranyl acetate 2.5%, the caryophyllene, beta-bisabolene, gamma-terpinene, thymol and borneol are also included in its composition. Easy to maintain, however, should avoid prolonged exposure to heat and humidity.
